There are 4.5 million people under probation and parole supervision in America — more than twice as many people as are incarcerated. Community corrections is now both a significant deprivation of liberty in its own right and a driver of mass incarceration. [insert possible transition sentence here] The Project will utilize advocacy, legislative, litigation, campaign strategies and external support leading researchers and field experts in order to build public and political will for change, build knowledge and capacity for change, and advance innovation in order to promote watershed community corrections reforms in the United States. Ultimately, the work of the Project is to ensure that far fewer people will be under probation and parole supervision; the time people spend under supervision will be dramatically reduced; and instead of being supervised under a punitive regime of surveillance, community sentences – whether under improved probation and parole or some other community-driven approach – will become an opportunity for people to receive services, supports and opportunities so they can successfully integrate into their communities.
